RE: Caution when your dog jumps into your truck

I keep trying to picture how this happened. Is there a sharp surface around the edge of the door or the frame? Or did she punch the hip bone right through the skin? At any rate, I am so glad she's alright and thanks for the heads up. Last year our tiny dog jumped off a top camper step and sent her back into spasms. We had to find a vet 2000 miles from home and all they could do was give her pain meds. Now we have to remember to lift her up and down. Just like with kids, these emergencies happen, and are about as traumatic to us.

RE: Pet things we learn the hard way!

Do NOT leave leftover pizza on the table! Even a 4 lb dog can make it up there. :S

RE: Anyone ever have a cat that doesn't nuzzle you? Pics incl.

I suspect there are more different personality types among cats than there are among dogs. They're all really unique. We've only had one really mushy cat but our others became more loving the older they got. The last year of our Siamese Sam's life, I couldn't eat a meal without him resting in my lap. That was fine, he was super independent when younger so it was a nice change. Our 12 yr old Edna (orange, marmalade tabby) loves to lay on her back and beckon with her "arms" for us to pick her up, like a toddler. She, too, was quite the independent young cat. She also likes to get behind me on the upper back of the sofa and weave my hair into dreadlocks. :E

RE: our little puppy has to have surgery

Such a sweet little girl and I think it is scary even for vets to do surgery on those tiny bones. Glad she is doing so well. When we first got baby Poquita at 6 weeks old and less than a pound, I scared myself to death reading online how easily the toy breeds can be injured. Neely may have just jumped off the furniture wrong or some other small accident that you never noticed. Some pups are not as "dramatic" as others when it comes to showing pain and that has good and bad points. Best of luck with her healing. Both your babies are adorable. How old is the little Chi?

RE: Using the cab over bunk for rabbits and guinea pigs

When I was a kid, I had guinea pigs in a cage in my bedroom for awhile and I have to say that the air quality in that room (and I) suffered for it. I can see maybe traveling with one piggie or a bunny, but a bunch of them in the overhead? Cough, choke, ick! If you have nobody to care for them while you're gone, did you know many pet shops will board them for you inexpensively? Ask around. Usually you just drop them off in their own cage and they're fine.

RE: Space saving storage idea

Forgot to add that I use those plastic zipper bags to store RV bedding when we're not using it. Then when we want to go somewhere in cool weather, I just unzip and take the bedding out and leave the zipper bags at home.

RE: Space saving storage idea

Recovering packrat that I am, I still save those heavy vinyl clear zipper bags that new sheets or blankets come in. They are always convenient, sooner or later. I like the idea of smaller containers, too. Sometimes, it becomes obvious after a few days which items we didn't really need at all. I carry those into the campground laundry room and leave them on a table. They disappear pretty quickly.

RE: One More Thing to Remember

Yikes! This account makes me remember a time back in the 1970's when friends of ours made a cross-country trip in a van (not even a conversion) with 5 kids and 2 dogs. The whole back of the van was just cargo space with blankets to sleep on. One night, dead tired and not finding anywhere better to stay, they pulled to the side of the road and fell asleep. By dawn's early light, they found that they had parked at the edge of a precipice! If anybody in the van had exited during the night, they likely would've fallen to their death. Stay clear of those windy bluffs!

RE: peticure

The following page was recommended to me as the best explanation of how to Dremel your dog's nails. I have to admit I've never gotten completely through it, however. That's a lot of reading! How I Dremel Dog Nails

RE: Fascinated with animals and nature? Why?

Childhood memories: I'd take my dad a handful of little fluffy creature of some sort. He'd say, "No, absolutely, you cannot keep it!" followed a few minutes later with, "Well, he is a cute little feller, isn't he?" Next thing I knew, he'd be building a cage..... :)

RE: Boy I did I get the heck scared out of me over July 4th

Bud would've kicked butt and asked questions later, followed by a major scene between dog owners and possible law enforcement intervention. I'm picturing me thumbing the phone book for bail bonds..... Phew! I'm glad it wasn't us! Also glad it was a good pittie. I'm not afraid of them but "some" people I know are sure all pits are killers.

Awwwww, I'm so sorry. It's got to be the saddest thing in the world, to lose the source of such pure love. Hugs to you and your DW.

RE: Who here takes Neurontin?

Rick, I found your post really touching. There is about nothing worse than watching your child suffering. Our only son was born a hemophiliac. Lots of medical mistakes were made while he was growing up and I still remember the doctors saying they didn't believe the blood supply was contaminated (early 1980's) and we should keep infusing the factor as usual. Of course, we lost him, as the parents of 10,000 other hemophiliacs, also, did. Point being, doctors do not always know what's safe. They're just guessing and/or hoping for the best. A parent's instinct often beats a medical degree by a mile, in our experience. My very best wishes for your dear girl's future. Judy

RE: Why RVing makes sense for people with disabilities

This was a trip DH has wanted for a long, long time and I'm glad we did it. But I have to admit, it wasn't all that fun for me. Of course, I would never say that to him (it would hurt his feelings!) But really, I'm glad it's over. I think I just had a 4-day vision of our future. Oh, wow, that's a scary feeling, isn't it? The seeing the future thing. Luckily, it only comes one day at a time. I am so glad you made your trip and even more glad you had the hand surgery a few months ago. That must've made things so much easier for you. Over and over again, I am in awe of the people who post here, who try so hard to overcome the limits of severe physical disabilities to enjoy a bit of the RVing life. You all are hopefully storing up some happy memories that will last. I applaud you. Judy

RE: Chloie acting like she has "mental problems??" help, please!

Did the vet check her ears quite thoroughly? I've had dogs act that if they had a foxtail or even an insect in their ears. You can imagine, it would drive you nuts. I am hoping there is nothing seriously wrong with her. Is it possible to call her breeder and ask about the symptoms?

RE: small version of a golden??

Yes, my first thought was a pound puppy. There are so many lovely medium sized dogs of questionable heritage without the medical issues some purebreds have. I've seen some beautiful blondes among them, too. :W

JUST A DOG Some might like to know that this lovely essay has been, in fact, posted in many vet clinics and rescue organizations for years and is part of many dog related websites. The author is Richard A Biby.

I get my books at half.com, a recent one only cost 75ยข and was brand new. Even with the s/h added, it was an excellent deal.

RE: Who here takes Neurontin?

Well, I think my first instinct was right, you don't treat a symptom with no idea of what's causing it. I went fishing on the internet tonight and came up with an amazing link. Bud started taking Zetia for cholesterol about 3 mos ago. I found a whole bunch of patient ratings for that drug that described similar nerve pain to Bud's, and worse. Many people said that the symptoms subsided within 3 days of going off the Zetia. We're going to try it and see what happens, then call the Dr. That might seem backwards, but with our HMO I know the drill. They prescribe something, anything, to satisfy the patient and get him out of their office. Nobody investigates anything, unless you make a huge big fuss. Maybe not even then. Somewhere I am sure there are doctors smart enough to put two and two together, but we haven't met one lately. I will report back. Thanks very much for the ideas, guys.
